ISNA Canada is known to host the best Eid festivals in the GTA – and the Eid al-Adha Festival which took place on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at the ISNA Islamic Centre of Canada was no different.
The packed evening began by welcoming the over 600 guests that joined in celebration for Eid al-Adha. The Children’s Carnival began at 4:00PM and included face painting, henna, various games, and concession goodies for children.
The main stage program began at 6:00PM with an opening dua’a by Sh. Hosam Helal and welcoming remarks by Dr. Imtiaz, President – ISNA Canada. This was followed by various government officials’ address to the community.
The City of Mississauga Mayor, Bonnie Crombie, talked about the city’s projects underway particularly the food drive initiative they are spearheading and requested our community’s support for this initiative. MP for Mississauga – Lakeshore, Sven Spengemann, and assistant, Hanan Harb, were also in attendance and addressed the crowd. The Minister of Finance and MPP – Mississauga South, Charles Souza, and Wife, Jenny, stayed the entire evening which was much loved by the community! MP for Mississauga – Erin Mills, Iqra Khalid, spoke about the current Islamophobia petition which is in circulation and the importance of supporting this initiative. The evening concluded with a performance from Syrian nasheed group, Limelight Sham, using traditional daff and vocals and the closing dua’a was made by Sh. Huzaifah Khan – Assistant, Director – Religious Affairs.
The food was delicious! Featuring spicy and non-spicy choices, the menu offered as non-spicy options – Afghani Rice, chicken breast with creamy saffron sauce, roasted potatoes and herbs, and veggie penne pasta with cream sauce. The spicy option included veggie biryani with yogurt, karahi chicken, mixed vegetables, and veggie penne pasta with rose sauce. Both options came with Greek Salad and Tandoori Naan.
Perhaps the most heartwarming part of the evening was the many Syrian newcomers in attendance. Gifts were given to all the children in an attempt to make all feel welcome and comfortable in their new home – Canada.
After thanking our official dignitaries, board members, and staff, this event could not have happened without the incredible dedication and passion shown by our volunteers in the Family Events Team. They did a fantastic job of organizing and hosting the community with ISNA.
Special shout out to the 30 – 40 students from the ISNA High School who volunteered their time and effort and added to a wonderful and successful evening.
