Did you know that this past Sunday, November 29, 2015, a group of almost forty people from across Canada dedicated an entire day to participate in discussions about how ISNA Canada can best service our Canadian Muslim community?
In fact, it was a Strategic Planning Meeting, the first of its kind for ISNA Canada and long overdue. So you may well be wondering…
“Why do this anyway?
“Who are these people and what compelled them to participate?”
“What did they actually talk about for an entire day?”
“What answers did they come up with?”
You may have heard the well-known phrase “Failure to plan is planning to fail”. It was very clear to the new 2015 Board that ISNA Canada deserves to dedicate time to strategic planning and developing a shared vision for the next 3 – 5 years with our precious stakeholders.
Earlier this year, the ISNA Canada Board embarked on an initiative to undertake a strategic planning focused approach to help define the future path of our organization. As a first step, individuals from coast to coast to coast were invited to provide their candid feedback in a survey about how they viewed ISNA Canada – especially its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
Individuals well known for their community activism, leadership, and management ability were invited – each one a stakeholder who cared about the direction that ISNA Canada needs to embark upon.
The day was spent getting to know brothers and sisters from Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, Mississauga, and Toronto. The day fostered collegiality and created a milieu to focus on the direction of the organization. Additionally, the process promoted an open and creative exchange of ideas, including putting disagreements on the table and working out effective solutions. From this state of healthy collaboration emerged the goals and objectives.
The participants identified the following six key areas of priorities:
- Social Services
- National standing
- Capacity building
You may be just a little curious to know “what will happen next?” or “how will this play out in the future?”
I can honestly say the best is yet to come! In future articles we will share more information related to these questions. For now we invite you to own the future with us – by getting involved and joining as a member or volunteer today!
