The landscape for Muslims living in Canada is exciting, dynamic, and demanding. The betterment of Muslim communities across Canada requires a very persistent commitment to change and improvement – it is a journey to foster quality relationships with all walks of life, diverse traditions and faiths; a journey to demonstrate our positive human values; and a journey to deliver tangible benefits that will enable our communities to prosper peacefully in this nation.
ISNA Canada embarked on this path 40 years ago. As the oldest Islamic organisation in the nation, ISNA Canada has institutionalised dozens of valuable programs and services to support Muslims across Canada. Each month, Lanterns will feature one of the many programs and services we offer. This month, we are pleased to share highlights about three key programs that make an extraordinary difference to Canadian Muslims.
IDB (Islamic Development Bank) Scholarship Loan
The Islamic Development Bank in co-ordination with ISNA Canada established an interest free scholarship loan designed to support Muslim university students living in Canada. The program is offered to students entering their first year of university. For a full list of eligibility criteria, please visit our website. The deadline to receive applications for the 2014-2015 academic year is June 30th, 2014, we are now accepting applications, please visit our website for further information.
40th ISNA Canada Annual Convention
This year ISNA Canada shall celebrate its 40th Annual Convention! ISNA Canada conventions are a gathering established by the founding members of the MSA (Muslim Student Association) whereby Muslims across Canada (and sometimes further afield) travel to meet in a designated city. The occasion captures the spirit of celebration and marks the success of each passing year. The event is valued for its spiritual enrichment and ‘emaan’ boosts, sharing of Islamic knowledge, information related to the Islamic activities throughout the country, a renewal of faith, networking of fresh ideas, and a meeting place of the ISNA Canada board and the general body.
Our team is busy planning the next convention scheduled to take place on May 16th, 17th and 18th, 2014. We invite you to join us at the next Annual Convention to be held at the ISNA Canada Center in Mississauga. Soon, our team will be unveiling all the details including information about speakers, program, bazaar, and sponsorship opportunities.
Volunteers without Borders
ISNA Canada has been blessed and most fortunate to have a thriving and dedicated base of volunteers who are always willing to lend a hand or stand shoulder to shoulder with our staff in serving our community. In 2013, over 200 volunteers helped us bring fifteen different programs to life including our annual convention, matrimonial program, Ramadan festivities, food bank program and funeral services. Each passing year brings a remarkable increase in the quality and number of volunteers.
To recognize the special efforts of our volunteers, last month, ISNA Canada hosted its 2nd Annual Volunteer Appreciation event at the ISNA Canada Center. To all our volunteers; ISNA Canada management expresses our highest gratitude, warmest wishes, and sincere prayers that Allah (SWT) accepts your efforts.
Insh’Allah in 2014, we will continue to develop our volunteer management and training program. We plan to recruit, train, and nurture volunteers across the GTA by collaborating and sharing ideas with other Muslim institutions. If you wish to volunteer in our newer 2014 programs including a new Community Information Center, Multimedia Management team, Employer/Employee Referral Service and the Interfaith Program – join our team by emailing your resume and area of interest to firstname.lastname@example.org.
